TimeOut NY Magazine Review Just In!

Chelsea on the Rocks
FOUR STARS
Dir. Abel Ferrara. 2008. R. 88mins. Documentary.

Abel Ferrara is not a natural documentarian. He will interrupt his subjects
with gruff asides or profane exclamations. His shot choices are haphazard
and arhythmic, always cutting against any recognizable beat. Yet Ferrara¹s
unconventional methods only manage to serve Chelsea on the Rocks, his loving
portrait of Manhattan¹s boho landmark, the Chelsea Hotel.

This downtown edifice has housed all number of tenants, from Tennessee
Williams to Patti Smith, from Ferrara himself to Thomas Wolfe. Each of these
people is represented here in some way, if only fleetingly. The director
even reserves some docudrama interludes‹performed as if they were endlessly
looping improvisatory slams‹for former lodgers Janis Joplin and Sid Vicious.
Yet Ferrara¹s bigger goal is to capture the vanishing essence of the
Chelsea, especially in light of the forced departure of its venerable
proprietor, Stanley Bard. The new owners have evicted a good number of
longtime residents to attract a more upscale crowd, and the filmmaker
doesn¹t bemoan these developments. But he does recognize the ease with which
our memories of specific cultural movements can fade, to be replaced only by
ghostly whispers and memorializing plaques.

It makes sense that, within his own act of remembrance, Ferrara would
include a hotel tenant’s home-movie footage of the September 11 attacks. The
underlying message, in both cases, is the same: Never forget. (Opens Fri;
Clearview Chelsea.)

“Chelsea on the Rocks” screened at the Jane Hotel

88274-1

Notorious indie film director Abel Ferrara, makes a rather appropriate, and mythical return to New York cinema with the much anticipated documentary “Chelsea on the Rocks.” The documentary is a raucous, incendiary, and strangely nostalgic portrait of the legendary Chelsea Hotel. Weaving rare archival footage, with expletive laden interviews that only the type of genius that brought us Bad Lieutenant and King of New York could do.

The films stars Ethan Hawke, Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones and Milos Forman amongst others. The Cannes premiered film has it’s final press screening tonight. Produced by Jen Gatien of DeerJen productions, and Internet entrepreneur Jay Kubassek’s upstart indie distributor Aliquot Films. Chelsea on the Rocks opens Friday October 2nd at the Clearview Chelsea Theater before nationwide platform release. [Chelsea On The Rocks Website]

Germany Opens First Nudist Hiking Trail

WARNING: Not suitable for children, (or evangelicals:)

“Naked hiking in the fresh and healthy air, when the weather is good, is an experience that many people just don’t want to miss out on.” Despite all the fun the people in that great Sigur Ross video look like they’re having (and, yes, be careful, the video does show naked people), this new 11-mile naked hiking trail just can’t seem like a very good idea. (Warning! German newspaper, naked pictures.) If only for the poison ivy and the mosquito bites.

Celebrate the Opportunity

As entrepreneurs and business owners, it’s incredibly important for us to stay attune to the world’s financial news. The recognition of trends, niche opportunities and the anticipation of economic movements are nothing short of necessities. However I personally, and I’m sure this resonates with the majority of you reading this, have grown tired of the incessant negativity that is spoon fed the masses daily.

Yes, things are precarious, and there is no definitive, singular resolution for the mess we have found ourselves in. But what I propose is that we begin shift this doomsday, limiting perspective into one that actually celebrates the opportunities this “calamity” has presented. The reality of the situation is that the structure of our larger global system was flawed, and needed massive renovation. Would we have preferred it happened differently? Of course we would. The painful byproducts of corporate irresponsibility, imperialist arrogance and simple greed have touched us all in some manner.

But the momentum has begun, and is ready to be harnessed. We exist in an age where the dissemination of information has created a more democratic and equitable platform for global progress than ever before. Not just in the limiting sense of more consumerism, but more comprehensively as real humanistic responsibility. Of course there will always be classes of wealth, I do not argue against that. But I would argue that they do not have to ignore the principles of mutual benefit. We all can prosper. It does not have to come at the expense of another human being.

The days of corporate monopolies, disguised as mergers, strategic acquisitions and the like are over. Commercial banking is dead. The days of building business on bricks of debt and the mortar of creative financing are over. I personally could go the rest of my life without hearing the word “derivative” ever again! So where does this leave us? Exactly where we should be, reliant on ourselves.

Strangely, no one really discusses with as much fervor about how bad things are, what actually pulled us from the first depression, or the recession of 2001. Entrepreneurs. Innovation. Risk takers. Half of our current Fortune 500 companies were started during a recession. What does this tell us? Well for one, sometimes its takes somebody skinning their knees a bit to get them stand up and do something different. Two, as the old adage goes; “every problem is an opportunity in disguise.”

There are 3 months left before we step into a new decade. How we choose to approach this next chapter, will determine its shape. Fear and unrest, or excitement and positivity.

I choose the latter.

Fiercely Canadian. Still.

toronto

Even though there are many days and weeks when I forget my roots (no not my “ROOTS”) I am always a little surprised at how much Canadian pride there is left in me. I never considered myself as being someone to leave the great white north if it were within my control, but I did. I don’t regret it, but I miss it.

This great post on moreinteligentlife.com got me all nostalgic this morning.

Chelsea On The Rocks NY Times

Abel Ferrara’s CHELSEA ON THE ROCKS is a cri de coeur for the Chelsea Hotel and the style of passionate bohemianism it represents, which Mr. Ferrara sees as having been under siege since new management moved in two years ago. The film, which opens Oct. 2, combines interviews with past and present residents of this West 23rd Street institution — including bold-face names like Ethan Hawke,Vito AcconciMilos Forman and R. Crumb — with re-creations of scenes from its history; in the most notorious, Jamie Burke and Bijou Phillips play Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen.
