“Scenius”

The legendary producer Brian Eno invented a great word that I’ve recently been introduced to. It’s called SCENIUS. The term refers to the fact that great innovations don’t come from independent genius, but rather from social scenes and interaction.

It’s easy to presume that in today’s day and age, progress or innovation can only come from the motivation of profits. That somehow people will find no interest in improving their lives, products, or more importantly the lives of others, if it somehow doesn’t involve making a buck.

The reality is that ideas are organic things. They need seeding, nurturing and attention. They are not glittering soloists in empty space, rather they are the connective tissue of human existence. Reliant on the energy and passion of its adoptive patrons.

In 5 days CarbonCopyPRO begins 6th Master Marketing Event. MME is a platform that was borne of the very idea that betterment comes from a collective energy; the gathering of minds and passions that progress our businesses and society at large, together.

As we near this great event (that I promise you is going to be our best ever) and we find ourselves in the midst of a global reformation of connectivity and conversation, lets never forget that time honored adage from Aristotle: “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

Coming Soon, to a browser near you….RockMelt!

First there was Flock, basically Firefox all dressed up in Myspacism. Then Mozilla jumped in the bathwater with Ubiquity (a double entendre if I’ve ever heard one) a plug-in like browser tool that let you update multiple social networking sites simultaneously. Hiya, Howdy and Hello….welcome RockMelt to the stage; Facebook’s integrated browser.

So…just to recap for a second, Facebook now has a deal with BING, to capture the search space, and now RockMelt to insert themselves into the browser argument? Not a bad market share right? Interesting little side-note, RockMelt is based on Google Chrome (same speed, looks and functions) so it looks like Facebook surely doesn’t discriminate when it comes to choosing partners.

In theory, RockMelt is actually more of a “social web browser” since you will eventually be able to upload, update (and every other up-prefix) to ALL of your social media platforms (it’s just Facebook and Twiiter at the moment).

Reviews of the beta phase are out. Per usual, the best review article is on WIRED: (Click Here to Read), or give it a test drive at RockMelt.com

Vertical Integration

I have, and will continue to believe, that intentions predict results. The true purpose of your actions, will always dictate the types of results.

Movement (or Cause) Marketing is no surprise to anyone anymore. It was a natural development that sprang from a lot people being frustrated, disappointed and fed up. People who decided that “choice” was a not a seasonal part of their lives. It never left, and was the real reason they’re lives might not have been what they wanted. In USA Today there is an article about how “Cause Marketing” is dead in Corporate America.

USA TODAY: “…with almost half of American respondents to Edelman’s goodpurpose survey saying they feel brands only support good causes for publicity and promotion — not because they really care — many companies may want to rethink their entire approach to cause marketing.”

It’s certainly true that consumers have woken up to the smoke and mirrors, and put choice back in the game. But what Carol Cone of Edelman fails to mention, is that it’s not just better consumer judgement and sniffing out the b.s., it’s entrepreneurs, around the world, that are providing a new solution.

A solution rooted in the peace of mind that only transparency and social responsibility can give. Let’s hope vertical integration finally proves to be true!! Maybe the principles that we embody as entrepreneurs, will finally make their way into corporations, but more importantly, lets hope it makes it to the aisles of our stores.

A Flip Phone? Run for the hills!

Funny story from the other day. So, I’d just left a meeting in midtown Manhattan. It’s early afternoon, so the elevators are pretty crowded and I’m making my way down from the 30th floor. At the 20th, doors ding open and on steps a corporate-ish team of some kind. Matching button down suits, dark colors; pretty standard from A to Z.

Blue suit One says to Blue suit Two: “Yeah..but did you see his phone?! Seriously…can’t trust a guy in a position like THAT with a flip phone!”

Ironically, as these very words are uttered; I’m checking my emails, sent a Tweet or two and made 3 adjustments to my synced calendar, simultaneously. Now, “can’t be trusted” might be a stretch and a little too harsh (while it was pretty funny at the time) but I kinda saw Blue Suit’s point.

I mean what does it say when a person seemingly refuses to embrace the efficiency and expedience of new technology. I’ve actually read studies about how job seekers have a lower chance of getting resume responses when they have yahoo, aol or (God-forbid) a HOTMAIL account!! (gives me the shivers!)

Our phones are rapidly replacing the laptop, as laptops did to the PC, as our primary means of technical engagement. We can pretty much do anything and everything we need to do from our phone. Surf, chat, text, respond, review, tweet, poke…you name it, it can be done.

I came across a great article this weekend about some great SmartPhone apps that make those tasks even easier (a few of which I already use actually).

Apps like: Evernote (for getting down those great ideas before you forget), InerTrak which helps with projects management and tasks, as well one of my personal favorites: JuiceDefender, which helps you maintain that oh so precious battery life by disengaging energy sucking apps when you don’t need them. As we know, these innovations are popping up everyday, and considering it’s a 350 million dollar market, there sure as heck aren’t going anywhere!
